Code for Gauges and Dead Weight Tester

09/16/2013 10:28 AM

Is there a code that says you have to be certified to calibrate gauges by use of a dead weight tester? The gauges are being used for Hydro testing per B31.3, B31.4, and B31.8. My understanding is as long as your equipment is calibrated and you have the appropriate paperwork to track your test then your good. If anyone has any info on this it would be helpful thanks.

Not here, though the Engineer/Surveyor for the company supplying burst indemnity insurance cover for the equipment will need either to see the test records and possibly the calibration facility for the gauge that is used, or will bring a suitably-calibrated gauge to the hydro-test party.

The next thing you ask is if the certifier for the person that is certified to calibrate gauges has been certified by an instance or institute to certify people to calibrate gauges.

I think what is more important is that the calibration process is documented in procedure as in results and that the person conducting the work is able to understand this procedure.

The answer will be NO as otherwise you end up in a certification spiral with no end.

Hope this helps.

Generally most every country has a metrological institution which well define the requirements for calibration certification.

See your local requirements.
