Has Amendment II Outlived Its Historical Intention?

Amendment II. A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.

And then there are various versions of an Engineers' Hippocratic Oath .. "I solemnly pledge my life to the service of humanity. I will be loyal to the profession of engineering and its members for the good of mankind. I will speak out against evil and unjust practice".

With the deadly gun attacks on the unarmed, both individually and in number at schools, cinemas, schools and now even defence installations, has the time come as engineers to question Amendment II and seek change?

Oh, come on.

How about if we clamor for mental health assistance for those with inclination and means to carry out the actions dictated by the voices in their heads? Guns, explosives, poisons, pestilence... this would catch them all.

What do the Iraqi or Afghani constitutions say regarding the rights of those citizens to bear arms? That seems to be working pretty well, eh?

I've long been an advocate of gun control but not the foolish, radical type of gun control that will conflict with the second amendment found in the Bill of Rights of the U.S. Constitution. (This is an international forum.) Gun owners do have a right to own guns but they also have a responsibility if they choose to own guns. Legal gun owners should be responsible to control their guns. Automobile owners are responsible for the damage caused by their vehicles, regardless of who was the driver.

Discussing the constitution, Piers Morgan style, appears to be politically motivated.

I do expect this thread to eventually spiral out of control and get pulled or blocked by an administrator. Maybe, just maybe we can hold back the virulence so some voices can be heard on this recent news. We will never solve this kind of a topic with a blog entry. But we can be civilized in our discussion.
