Wide Input AC Voltage Range Relay

09/22/2013 9:26 AM

Hello

Does anyone know about a type of relays that would accept a wide range of input voltages , for instance, 100 - 300 AC ? The current of the one phase (just 1 NO contact) load it would switch on - some 0.1 A of 230V AC.

Your question is ambiguous. Do you mean the input voltage across the coil or the voltage across the contact(s), same question for the current being carried?

Yes, you need to clarify. For example, most contacts don't really "care" what the voltage is, up to their maximum voltage rating. So any relay contact that is rated 300VAC will be fine for anything down to about 10VAC (below that, contact resistance may become an issue). But operating coils are a completely separate issue. There are relays with solid state coils that accept a very wide range of input voltage. I know for a fact that Siemens makes one that will accept any control (coil) voltage from 24-265V, AC or DC. The contacts on it are only rated 2A unfortunately, but it is very useful as a signaling relay.

Thank you ! I thought till now all SS relays are 4-32V DC input. Exactly what I need, however a bit costly.

Some DC relays have a very wide range e.g. Omron G2RL-1-H rated 75% pull-in max, 180% @23 'C [ 1:2.4 ratio] max with up to 48VDC coil.

With a bridge rectifier and a resistor or resistor- capacitor ballast for 230VAC, this could be extended to 3:1 ratio because the 35% coil resistance increase hot would be swamped by the fixed impedance ballast.

Range could be extended further by zener diode(s) on coil.

A number of AC relays have bridge rectifiers buried in them.

Yuri, You have now told us that your question pertains to SS (Solid State) relays, therefore the previous postings are irrelevant. SS relays must be used within their published limits or you will risk failure due to overvoltage, overcurrent, or both.
