Restricted Earthfault Relay Selection

10/03/2013 6:10 AM

Dear sir/madam,

perhaps there are alots of post mentioned about the restricted earth fault protection for transformer winding.

but one thing that doubt me is that can i use the ANSI 50G earth fault relay to act as restricted earth fault protection for the HV transformer? by just putting 3 x phase CT and 1 neutral CT at transformer neutral to earth line?

Thanks.

Yes! Of course! In fact, every unit protection relay is basically an Instantaneous Over current relay only. A 50G relay can very well be used as a Restricted Earth Fault Relay. Burt, remember to include a Stabilising Resistor & a Surge Supressor Disc in the Relay Circuit. Also, take care to match the phase & neutral CTs properly.

Thank you so much. But the price different of the ANSI 50G and ANSI 87 protection relay is very big different, thats why i am here to seeking advice.

The restricted earth fault relay by ABB SPAJ115C (ANSI87) is just too expensive for me.
