Tan Delta Test

10/07/2013 5:36 AM

1. What will be the difference of tan delta values when the test is conducted between Live- Tan delta point(UST Mode) & Live - Earth(GST Mode). If there is no difference what is the use of providing Tan delta terminal seperately?

2. Is it required to do Tan delta test for SF6 Gas filled current Transformers?

1. UST mode ("Ungrounded Specimen Test") is used for testing between 2 points that normally are both insulated from ground, such as across the open contacts of a circuit breaker pole. The GST mode ("Grounded Specimen Test") is for testing of a portion of apparatus that normally is operating phase to ground, such as a circuit breaker or transformer bushing from the conductor to the case or tank (which is grounded in service). GST tests can be done in the UST mode of the test set. However, UST tests cannot be made in GST mode, because the contribution of the insulation to ground element cannot be eliminated. Having both modes allows speedy testing of the various elements of the insulation in a transformer or circuit breaker without having to move the test leads around many times, just by changing the mode switch.

2. What does the project's test specification or the current transformer instruction manual say? I would normally expect "Yes," but that might not always be the case.

Thanks for reply.Based on your points i understood that the test can be performed with out Tan delta point (i.e.,In GST mode) also but the need of providing tan delta point specially for Instrument transformers & Bushings is unanswered.

It is obvious that you are very new to insulation testing otherwise you would know that it is a pain to conduct GST tests, especially in or near energized equipment. The GST test always involves interference and thus makes it very difficult to get stable and reliable test results.

On the other hand, the UST test can always be conducted in a manner that minimizes interference and provides accurate and stable numbers.

When testing SF6 insulated equipment such as CTs, you have to do a test to determine the insulation qualities of the support structure - which is NOT gas, and you have to test a sample of the SF6 separately for moisture and other contaminants. It is most convenient to have a "Test Tap" on such assemblies.
