Safe Software and Sites

10/13/2013 4:19 AM

Hi all

I recently downloaded a "free" old version of WinZip 8 , despite using what I thought was a reputable site, I ended up spending 4 hours resetting my search to Google and deleting programs that were attached to it with the associated viruses.

Is there an interest in promoting reputable sites and free programs or ones that offer additional benefits at a reasonable price:

My picks are IrfanView(image viewer), Foxit Reader(PDF reader), Colorblind Assistant(colour sampler), Spartan(super clipboard).

What are your favorites and what are your thoughts about mine?

Tony

I really like foxit reader as it is very lean and can handle multiple PDF files open at once. I suffered with adobe pdf viewer for years until i discovered it.

But you have to be careful where you download the executables from. Two reputable download sites I have regularly used are cnet download and file hippo.

Secondly, if a free software comes with additional tool bars or other add-ins, they should give you the option to install it during the installation procedure .. ( it may be that u may have missed it or they did not)

The point is, there is no such thing as a "freeware" at the end of the day..

I agree you have to take great care downloading. Both File Hippo and CNet have a habit of placing the "Download" button under a unrelated piece of software, I try to use the parent site if possible. I'm happy to pay extra (less than $100 normally) for enhanced features, so giving you 30 days of the better product is good salesmanship.

I receive building plans via PDF and Foxit has a facility to scale them for estimating.

The same goes to AVG-I eventually couldn't even remove it from the Windows's add/remove software part, so I had to use iObit removal. Another thing-beware of a "search engine" called qvo6, it's really nasty.

Get yourself a copy of Acronis. Is a back up software. Has nice little add on called Try and Decide. Try and Decide creates a partition that all of the new download is placed. You can then try out the new application. If it has a virus attached then don't keep it. Acronis shut down the computer and reboots it. The partition goes away the virus with it. No 4 hour trying to rid yourself of it.

Sells for 49 dollars US.
