There are a lot of areas of engineering projects in agriculture.

I do not know where you are, or if this is a under graduate/graduate project. but it is disappointing and explains a lot about the quality of some of our Agricultural Engineers of today if they can't even at least come up with an area of a project.

1. grow crops with less water

2. grow crops that are drought tolerant.

hows that?

So much depends on where you are in the world, and what are the big issues for agriculture in your area. Also what resources are available for your project, big or small.

In North America, the use of row cover for pest control is a very effective and relatively new application of ag technology (at least, it's becoming the strategy of choice for organic farmers). Cover design issues include textile weight (re climate or seasonal conditions), with or without supports, anchorage, other means of sealing the row against pests. The 'no tech' approach here is to bury the fabric edges in the ground, which increases maintenance cost and shortens the lifespan of the material.

In Africa, design of pumps or well boring equipment to supply water for crops is a big issue. Simple, inexpensive designs and portable equipment for drilling have been featured in the news.

Another interesting project is the design of solar dryers, to preserve excess harvest instead of having it go to waste. This is really important where transportation infrastructure is not available to move surplus food to bigger markets, or where spoilage occurs before the product can be consumed by the available markets, or where food is seasonally scarce.

Re: sustainable designs, since both sun and wind increase the crop demand for water (unless it's raining) I've often dreamed of an ideal irrigation system, where water delivery is automatically powered by the same condition that caused the need. Call it a pipe dream. This would be a difficult and expensive project, requiring a lot of resources.

It's a very interesting subject, so I hope you'll post about it here, and let us know what you learn in the process.
