How Can A PLC Reset The Actual Value Of An Absolute Encoder Of A Servomotor

10/30/2013 6:04 AM

We need to reset from the plc the actual value of an absolute encoder of a servomotor. How can we do this? We are using the following hardware. Thank you

PLC CPU 313C-2DP COMPACT CPU WITH MPI, 16 DI/16 DO, 3 FAST COUNTERS (30 KHZ), INTEGRATED DP INTERFACE, Siemens 6ES7313-6CG04-0AB0

Control Unit SINAMICS CONTROL UNIT CU320-2 DP WITH PROFIBUS INTERFACE WITHOUT COMPACT FLASH CARD Siemens 6SL3040-1MA00-0AA0

Memory Card SINAMICS S120 COMPACTFLASH CARD WITH FIRMWARE OPTION PERFORMANCE-EXTENSION INCLUDING CERTIFICATE OF LICENCE V4.05 Siemens 6SL3054-0EF01-1BA0

Double motor module SINAMICS S120 DOUBLE MOTOR MODULE INPUT: DC 600V OUTPUT: 3AC 400V, 5A/5A Siemens 6SL3120-2TE15-0AA4

Servomotor SIMOTICS S 1FK7 COMPACT 8 NM, 100 K, 3000 RPM, 2,14KW , ABSOLUTE ENCODER 2048 P/REV (ENCODER A-2048) WITH DRIVE-CLIQ INTERFACE; Siemens 1FK7080-5AF71-1FB2

If it's an absolute encoder, you can't reset it except by disconnecting from the shaft, physically rotating the encoder (disk) and re-connecting. Within the PLC you could add code to apply a positive or negative offset to the encoder value, which would have the same effect.

Check to see if your encoder can be reprogrammed from absolute to relative. Check also your documentation to see if a reset wire is available.

Or when you take the data into the PLC from the encoder, put it into a data register (word) and use that value in your logic by multiplying it with another data register set to a value of one. When you want to reset, just load a value of zeo into that second register.

Most high speed counter cards (PLC module you wire the encoders to) have a discrete input pin you can activate via PLC to reset high speed counter card to zero.

Why would you use an 'absolute' encoder when your equipment can read 'quadrature'?

Maybe coz the servomotor was supplied with an absolute encoder fitted.
