11/05/2013 1:59 PM

Now you can get help with anything it seems, as long as you can pay, and configure a live video feed....is this the future...??

I have used You Tube quite a bit............. for DIY projects when I'm doing something I'm unfamiliar with....... working on a car and such.... (No, not a Cavalier)

Yes the instructional video's on YouTube are a big hit, I use them all the time....This takes it a step further, with actual experts helping in real time....I was surprised to see a lot of them are free....can't beat that.....

My favorite is Khan Academy. This guy started out helping his cousin with math by posting you-tube videos and then just kept going. He has thousands of videos helping with all kinds of math and some other subjects (that are not as important as math).

Wonder how they deal with anonymos callers!

Maybe they have a better chance of getting additional information from the caller for all those broad questions.

What would the standard answer be?

"Sorry we can not help you on this topic, you will ahve to educated yourself in this matter first as I have to feeling you would not understand the answer!"

What? Telling people to Google it themselves?

Sorry Lyn.

Terra may have a point though. People call for help, you Google for them and give them the answer they could have found for themselves and then charge them for it.

Professional Googlers....most probably have to get certified...

Oddly, a YouTube video helped me decide not to do a job myself.

I was thinking of replacing the front rotors on my '94 Honda Accord EX. I found a video of a guy showing how to do it on a '95. But he explained how much trouble it was in the end for him, (a 'captive' rotor, that was rusted in place) then proceeded to show how to do it. He ended up building a jig to hold the wheel assembly in the right position for getting them loose. His comments were enough for me to pass the privilege along to a brake shop. Of course they found other stuff that "needed" to be done. Ended up costing me $500+! But, yeah, I can see live video help giving a feeling of support to a DIY'er... especially a neophyte.

I've replaced them with and with out watch a video......... (I hate working on cars and take them in when I can)

On older cars, I'm more reluctant just for that reason......

Meh, rotors are not that bad. I only saw one that took a torch to heat off, but the bearing had been worn out for a few weeks.

I do remember being intimidated the first time I did drum brakes...so many springs and levers and pins and such that just kinda fall out when you get them loose. I didn't even have a good manual (and years before youtube) when I also didn't have the money for the shop. So I just got stuck in and tried to take things out and set them on a cardboard sheet just how they needed to go back in. Everything went well until I tried to bleed the brakes and twisted off the fitting. Everything worked when I was done so I just sold it (at a tidy profit) 6 months later...I loved that little volkswagon golf
