COP Excel Spreadsheet for Calculations

11/06/2013 3:42 PM

I have a client with several Centrifugal chillers ranging from 600 tons to 1700 tons who is looking for the COP values. Does anyone know of an excel spreadsheet or other simplified way that we can input the data points and simply press enter? I hate to have to reinvent the wheel if someone already has it. I tried to Google it. There are many discussions but no actual calculators.

Inventing the wheel is different from inputting data and auto- process these in Excel with the right formula(s), Excel has powerful possibilities to do that.

Define COP!

Use the discussions to make your own excel sheet.

From experience it takes more time to evaluate an existing excel sheet and how everything is calculated than it takes to make your own.

If the Excel input is not protected dont even bother as everybody could have changed the formulas.

Its for a client right? So make sure you earn your money nobody else will do this for you!

I totally agree...

Most of proper development is analysis 80% +/- 10%. This is something you can do yourself since there is little skill involved. I suggest breaking down complex formulas into several cells (columns) for easier debugging. Later you change the property to make the column invisible. If you can do the calculation manually you can do this.

No excel sheet but here is a clue.

The Scientific Equations for COP and Energy Savings calculations are listed as follows: Qe=Me x Cp x (te-tl) (1) WD= √3 x V x I x p.f. (2) COP= Qe (3) WD 1 . - 1 . COPo COPn (4) %Save'n = . 1 . COPo %Save = ∑ (%Save'n x On) (5) Where, Qe = Refrigeration effect of Chiller (kW) Me = Mass flow rate of chilled water (kg/s) Cp = Specific heat capacity of water (kJ/kg) Te = Entering Chilled water temperature (°C) tl = Leaving Chilled water Temperature (°C) WD = Power consumption of chiller (w) V = Voltage (V) I = Current (A) p.f. = Power Factor COP = Coefficient of Performance %Save'n= Percentage of energy Savings in particular load range (%) COPn = Coefficient of Performance after Frigi-Tech application COPo = Coefficient of Performance before Frigi-Tech application On = Occurrence in particular load (%) %Save= Average Energy Savings at particular condensing temperature (°C)

The above is the complicated formula. I just figured there must be something that is already created that you can put in the values and figure COP. Much like a Super Heat Calculations. Its just a formula. I didnt know if Trane, Carrier or York already had one that they pass out to their customers.

We dont use COP here in the States that much, but they sure do overseas as their basis for energy performance on HVAC.

It was just in a passing discussion with a client and I told him I would ask here. It is nothing I am hired to do. Just trying to lend a helping hand.
