How Much Do We Not Know?

11/06/2013 9:44 PM

http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2013/11/131105081352.htm

We do not have to go far to discover new things. Seem even the human body is not fully understood and as simple as a ligament has to be found (again) to make knee injury treatment more successful.

How can we overlook these things as a society? How comes it was not picked up before?

Bulletin ...... Bulletin ...... Bulletin ..... Bulletin

We interrupt this program for a special announcement.

This just came in!

Human beings are fallible.

I repeat.

Human beings are fallible.

That is all.

We now return to our regularly scheduled programming.

"Barbie's Beach Blanket Bingo"

Ken: Oh no, I can't get my Cavalier to start. What should we do?.....

And then Barbie's old boyfriend 'GI Joe' returns from Afganistan. Get kens calvalier to start, uses it to pick up Barbie. And both GI Joe and Barbie have a wonderful time at her beach blanket bingo party.

I'd say that the concept was picked up in 1879...it took us this long to find it.

We still know very little about the intricate workings of the human body.

See this exactly right. I didn't even know that we didn't know that they did know long time ago!

Unknown unknowns. I like that.

Infinite possibilities off set by infinite impossibilities.

Ever worked with people that were so incompetent that they had no clue that they were clueless?

Heavy concepts.

The ligament that nobody new existed for sure until now is strange. Surely folk that have cut up cadavers as part of their trade have seen it. Have they ignored or dismissed it as an unknown not worth knowing about?

What else have they missed?!!!

We know enough to make life longer and happier. Now we need to start fixing the political system so it applies to everyone in the world, not just the privileged few.

Why do you think they want you to live longer?

So they can screw more out of you.

The more people think they know.... the more they should realized that what they knew is just sh?. so little... Very true in the medicine field where Doctors think they're God!

Yeah doctors....some of them at least. They don't take kindly to being asked to explain.

Erm, the doctor's problem is that the patient alway knows more than he does, so there's not much point in trying to explain anything :)

If that was so then the patient wouldn't be asking.

The doctor's problem is that they're probably not so sure themselves and therefore can't explain with any confidence.

Not ALL MDs are like this.

In Asia most MDs have an attitude problem. They don't take kindly to being questioned by the great unwashed.

I concur with your observations.. and with what you say about MDs in Asia..

Basing from my own 30+ years of experience, having worked with one of the largest medical institution in the country. It's hard to admit but the situations do exist and are true! Even with QA, and other internal review boards set up in place, those situations are happening. Being repeated to a varying degrees of practices here in U.S. as well!

Similarly like in any other form of disciplines, there are practitioners who are book smarts and there are those who are good in applications... Adding individual attitudes to the equation since I would say we all have, further complicate the matter.. We can always find rotten apples in the mix, and the field of medicine is no different, except their practice deals directly with human lives! Kind of worrisome for me!

It appears a peer review is required.

The knee has been dissected probably a million times.

I doubt we have mutated into something new.

A peer review is certainly required.

The article implies by its comment that severe ACL injuries are preceded by damage to this newly discovered ligament. It could be that this ligament (ALL) is relatively fragile and most individuals unknowingly have a damaged ALL but unless these individuals are very active their ACL supports the load by itself. You should remember that revealing a human ligament requires dissecting a cadaver. Additionally the previous standard dissecting technique may not reveal the ALL for some reason. The previous technique may have been developed in the past because the ALL was always damaged by the more active lifestyles of the past. Dissecting a million knees with a technique that obscures this ligament from view is not proof of anything. You should remember from the article, this ligament was postulated to exist back in 1879.

You are certainly correct that it is very unlikely that a new human mutation would create a new ligament in people. However, mutations do happen all the time. I see no contemporary advantage for this ligament to our species to make the pr

So the question is "Why didn't we know what we know now before we knew it?"

Colonel Sandurz: Now. You're looking at now, sir. Everything that happens now, is happening now.

Dark Helmet: What happened to then?

Colonel Sandurz: We passed then.

Dark Helmet: When?

Colonel Sandurz: Just now. We're at now now.

Dark Helmet: Go back to then.

Colonel Sandurz: When?

Dark Helmet: Now.

Colonel Sandurz: Now?

Dark Helmet: Now.

Colonel Sandurz: I can't.

Dark Helmet: Why?

Colonel Sandurz: We missed it.

Dark Helmet: When?

Colonel Sandurz: Just now.

Dark Helmet: When will then be now?

Colonel Sandurz: Soon.
