Current Transformer for Energy Meter

11/11/2013 2:08 AM

Why the current transformer is not suggested to fix for A feeder's energy recording which is rated below 63A?

Expense.

Why buy a CT when the current can safely be handled by the meter?

You don't state a voltage. Above normal LV supplies then a CT is a must.

As per usual, not enough information!

For higher current ratings size of CT will go out of hand, therefore CT is used.

Dear Muthuvel, For any 3ph/3ph-4W static energy meter CT is must. Because your energy meter is not able to carry 63 Amp of load current through it. But some small energy meters up to 40 Amp (which i have seen) are designed for 40 Amp current to flow through it. Otherwise, normally all energy meters are designed for 1 Amp / 5 Amp load only.
