Typhoon Recovery in the Phillipines

11/11/2013 8:35 PM

Hello Friends,

I recently completed putting together a website that aims to get the cheapest water purification and disinfection technologies (often costing little or nothing - including using what likely are readily available materials) into the hands of anyone using social media or the Internet, so that even those local people nearest a disaster such as the Typhoon Haiyan can help others help themselves in times like these. My dilemma is how to get the word out to these people ? Thoughts ?

I say let them figure it out themselves. (Not meant in a bad way either.)

From what I have known of the people of the philippines they are overall smart, educated, resourceful and hard working plus unlike us americans they do not have their hands tied by government regulations, agencies and bureaucracy limiting what they can do to get things done in a situation like this.

I say give them a hand but let them dictate what and how they need to do stuff to fix things. They're smart enough to figure it out!

I don't recall where I saw it but one of the web new stories yesterday listed a facebook page for helping people in the damaged areas connect with people on the outside. The page had at least a few thousand friends/followers as of yesterday. That might be one place to get information to people that need it. A little Google effort and you should be able to find it.

I suppose they could use coconut shell charcoal to (1) press into shape for water filtration, and (2) provide fuel for boiling the filtered water for disinfection.

From reports I have been hearing the Phillipinos need quickly available food immediately. For that we will have to rely on the good old U.S. Navy, and Her Majesty's fleet as well. Maybe Japan should have another go at it, but with a much more helpful bent this time.
