Pointers Towards NEMA Comparison Motor Studies

11/17/2013 11:13 AM

Hi one and all...

I've spent a fairly productive day looking for comparison studies on NEMA motors. I've found quite a lot, motor specs, reason for changing, cost implications, ROI's.. etc, etc, but nothing that actually nails it down for me!

I need anything that shows the benefits/comparisons (side by side) of replacing/using a NEMA Premium motor instead of a NEMA D etc.... something with the problems associated with NEMA D motors (I got something about the efficiency of NEMA premium motors.. can't hurt to have more)

If anyone has or knows of any links on any studies/white papers, please would you let me know. The NEMA web site has the spec but only if you have $350 plus to spend, and I don't need the spec....

I need a simple study to show to a client the difference and benefits of changing to a more efficient motor, and if it has anything in that doc with references to using the motor with a VSD.. even better!

Many thanks in advance.

many thanks.. I will have to dig deep into the second web site, the first one is good, found something I wanted.

I stated NEMA D as that is what's being used at this moment.... I have to show them that while they have lots of them, they cost money to operate.

Looks like you need to estimate energy savings for them and side by side life-cycle cost. In the next 5 years keeping existing motors will cost you $xxx, new premium motors in the next 5 years will cost you $xxx. In the next 10 years...

If you want to look at both sides, it will depend on each motor's app. But could be in one or more situations a premium motor spec to handle speed/torque may have a pay back in energy savings longer than 5 years. So you have to put yourself in your customer's shoes too. If the maintenance and energy savings is not enough justification for the customer, you need to find out from them why. so you can address that concern of theirs.

Then instead of searching for comparison of all attributes, you may have an easier task of search for only a couple attributes and making your own chart to meet customer's concerns.

thanks for that.. that is exactly what I want to do.. however I need data to put into my spreadsheet. The data must be a direct comparision between the two types of motors.

Specific to the Design B vs Design D then, take a look at this.
