Industrial Floor Fans with Timer for My Spinning Studio

11/28/2013 2:45 PM

To whom it may concern,

I'm designing a new spinning studio that will have floor fans infront of the cyclists which will work on a programmed plan of time. I want to conduct 45 minutes of spinning session for my clients, on stationary bikes, and I'm going to place 3-4 round floor fans in front of them, so they will stay cool and feel the "wind" coming infront of them, but I don't want the fans to blow wind all the time in same intensity. I want to be able to program them to start, lets say, for 5 minutes at intensity 1, then change to intensity 3 for 2 minutes, then back to intensity 2 for 3min and 30 seconds... you get the point. I want to immitate the real front wind blowing that a cyclist is feeling while riding outside, but indoors.

I have 2 questions:

1. What type of floor round fans do you think I should use? (with normal plug to connect to the outlet in the wall)

2. What timer do I buy and connect to all 4 fans so they all do exactly the same intensity at the same exact time?

Thank you,

Omer.

No, no, no... why make it simple when it can be complicated and wonderful?

Why not sensors in the driven bike wheels, these sending a signal to be used to determine the speed of the fans? The faster you pedal, the more breeze you feel.

Hmmmnm... yes, I can see your point... only four fans and twenty spinners. Well, maybe only select bikes will be monitored. No, monitor them all and average the speed of groups according to which fan they are near.

All of this will boil down to how much money you are willing to spend.

tnx but not logically true, as when you are riding a bike down the hill you dont really ride fast, and the wind go fast on your face, so... there is no direct connection between fast pedaling and wind intensity, plus those sensors are too expensive.

Thank you, but not going to work, I must synchronize the fans according to the video that i build. each second of the video is synchronized by the fan timer.

thank you for your time!

1. Don't overthink the simple part. Just get some big fans and be done with it. Talk to a fan sales place. Fans-Industrial & Commercial in Miami, FL Variable speed fans are not a big deal, but the controls to run them will be expensive.

2. Don't make it too complicated. Just group the fans so that you have a slow, medium, fast, and racing group of "spinners" and let the fools who are paying you to ride stationary bikes in Miami Florida move from one group to the other.

BTW, I thought you were spinning wool thread when I saw the title.

Welcome back to Doorman, who has been traveling aroung the world on his private 200 foot yatch.

Sounds like a theatre prop to me.

Without feedback from the actual bike peddling rates themselves it's just (or more of ) a gimmick.

One smaller fan per bike would enhance the virtual reality experience bit of it.

What you described is within the realm of possibilities. (Alot of effort for pointless trivia IMHO.)

Most floor fans have speed controllers. Could you not just walk around and change the fan speeds manually?

1 fan in front of each person.

A second kicks in from time to time, maybe a third.

Use heavy duty fans...they can run for days in perfect safety.

I think the Dyson bladeless fans are way cooler, but they are three times the price. OTOH, they look so cool that people will jump through hoops to stand in front of them. No big rotating blades in front of people...heck they could watch TV through the one in front of them! Put on a video of a Point of View ride through the Tour de France or one of the exciting rides through the mountains.

No controllers. Just a switching system. Even a simple security switching system would work. You know..the ones which turn your lights off and on when you are gone.

Why not just drive a small fan on the handlebars that is hooked to the pedals of each cycle. Picture a speedometer cable driving it. Then if they pedal faster, they get more air. But, it'll cost money.

Really, I'd just put a couple of fans up front.

If they're dumb enough to pay you for sweating, they deserve to.

If I am sweating due to physical exertion I'm normally getting paid to do it. It is not pleasant. I'd never consider paying for the same feeling of misery.

So if they want the real life feel and effects of riding outside why don't they just go and do that instead?

Then again I never have understood city people.

They will pay big money for exercise that us rural people would happily pay anyone else to do for us.

They ride bike indoors going nowhere but want to have an "outdoor feel" to it.

They can't stand all the other people they are around but still choose to literally live work and travel on top of each other.

They all live together for convenience and safety yet going anywhere is never convenient and they are scared to go outside because of all of the other people.

I don't get it.

Oh relax.... the world doesn't always unfold as you might like it to do.

Much as we might like it to do.

Get dc fans, sold for fitting into vehicles, and fit dynamos to the bikes to drive the fans. The harder the pedaling the faster the fan/s will go. I say fans because the more fans you fit to the bike/dynamo the harder it becomes to pedal.

Mount a gear tooth sensor to the frame and position it to sense the teeth of the largest sprocket. Use the pulse train frequency to vary the voltage to the fan. I'd use the Arduino processor. Here's a start http://forum.arduino.cc/index.php?topic=119348.0

If you are not so inclined try a frequency to voltage converter:
