Help Repairing A/V Transmitter in Wireless Mini Cam

11/30/2013 8:31 PM

I purchased a cheap A/V wireless cam system to install into my sons remote 4x4, anyway all was going well had the camera opened up and the lens mounted to the dash, when reouting the antenna through the roof a couple of the wires came off the transmitter, there are 4 wires: red(+9v), black (ground), yellow (video I think) and blue (audio I think). The red and yellow wires came off and I cannot figure out where they belong. I found a pic of the exact same transmitter here on this site and was hoping someone here could give me some help in getting this back up and running, here is the pic, thanks for any advice or help you can supply, remember this isn't my board just an identical pic, mine is intact and functional except for the wires being detached.

"same transmitter here on this site"

Can you copy and paste the thread where you got the picture?

Can you tell where the wires were soldered? Pad, or thru-hole?

Is buying another one out of the question?

Can you solder on a surface mount board?

just soldered to end of components, no thru-holes or marking except for GND, that one I figured out.

new transmitter is same price I paid for this entire system

yup over 10 years smt repair experience and pace certified since 1995

You better make a picture of your card. Normally, when they come off the print, the rests of solder on the wires and the contact show where they have been. Shape of solder. You must see something on the print with a magnifier glass that gives you a clue.

If you have the ground and + figured out, playing with the 2 others (when you have located the spots) might not give you a lot of troubles. Since these are signal level wires, you could protect the end with soldering a capacitor of 10 microfarad 16 Volts and test it out. You can actually touch some bad points with this set up without creating more damage. Audio could connect to a microphone or a audio transistor or opamp, that is traceable. Video is normally about 1 Volt.

Also, the service manual should elaborate this. Call the manufacturer or distributor and simply ask him or her.

Tried all your suggestions, even with a my lighted magnifying glass on my soldering bench I cannot tell where these wires came from, yes I have been doing SMt repair for over 10 years, have held pace certification since 1995, contacting manufacturer, hahah MADE IN CHINA DUDE, and besides these are non branded items, no manuals what so ever, cannot get a good pic of my actual board because all I have is camera on my phone, crappy resolution for this sort of thing, O well was hoping it would have been a no brainer for you electrical guys, thanks for suggestions all is appreciated.

You probably find it on alibaba.com or madeinchina.com. Today they don't work but from Sunday evening most of them chat the whole night long. Just take your time to communicate, unless you are Chinese too.

The print you show has the HF (Video) on the right side - under the YZ1.2.GAV1 is the printed antenna. The video could be on the soldering point above V1. Does the length of the wires give you a hint?

OK Here is some additional info the blue and black wires are still attached to the board, I have marked their locations with colored squares blue and black, also marked the red and yellow spots, pretty sure red is right or close to that point, as for yellow not a clue to be honest, is the yellow spot I marked in the same location as you described?? Wire length isn't a good indicator the red and yellow are shorter by quite a bit than the black and blue that is why they came off stressed the solder joints while I was manipulating the transmitter inside the cab of the truck. Have attached longer wires to red and yellow, now all the same length.

looks like this one, mine has 4 IR leds on front, other than that it's identical, specs are same in description too.

You might check the nature of the red and yellow wire. If they carry audio and video, and go e.g. to a cinch plug or connector, suspect that they are coax wires. Actually 2 wires in 1 plastic color. 1 in the center (probably or also the same color (or just black or transparent) as the mantle AND a shield set around it. These shields need a mass (ground) on the print too.

no coax, both red and yellow are just stranded copper, red has +9v verified with DVM.

Can you buy another one, carefully take a look at the configuration, and return it?

Do you have a Hackerspace near you? www.hackerspaces.org

They usually have folks doing projects like yours and more so they might be able to help you.
