Being an engineer, I tend to offhand dismiss the creationist view of a 6000 year old earth. Creationists try to justify a 6000 year old earth (actually universe) by dismissing the speed of light from distant planets, put forth arguments about time dilation, dismiss carbon 14 dating as being unreliable, dismiss geological dating of rocks because some sample of new lava flow dates thousands of years older than known older flows, missing "strata" in rocks, apparently someone found a T-rex with "blood with DNA in its teeth", so any reported "hiccup" in the dating process, confirmed or not, is immediately proof to them the bible is a geological and cosmos road map.
If any of you have documented rebuttals to some of the vague creationist views I would really appreciate the ammunition. Within my family there is even dissension, but I have not had the time to research the fundamentals of refuting the claims. I have my hands full just trying to keep the balance on sorting out news stories of persecution of Christians versus what is just collateral damage in countries with long histories (thousands of years) of "tribal" wars and national struggles.
I realize this can be a "hot topic", as it is within my own family - Tolerance - the ability or willingness to tolerate the existence of opinions or behaviour that one dislikes or disagrees with - is important here.
