Laser Guide

12/04/2013 11:17 AM

I'm working on a fabricated frame assembly which needs quite accurate alignment with a tubular hub. What I'd like to do is use a laser pointer to project the central axis of the tubular through the framework as a reference point. My question is, does anyone know of an off the shelf gadget which would clamp onto a pipe and align a laser with the central axis ie along the longitudinal axis of the pipe?

Only the all knowing, all seeing, all powerful Great OZ knows everything. We mortals have to Google.

I've got two laser levels at home, but couldn't remember the brand of either.

Cheapest "off the shelf" item we found are teh laser sights used for guns and such. They only need one AA battery.

Thanks for the replies, maybe my original post should have been more clear.

The laser itself is not really the issue here, I can get many off the shelf lasers it is the clamp which is the issue here. The ones suggested (and I know there are many pump shaft alignment clamps) all tend to attach on the outside of the shaft and align the two shafts. In my case I want the laser to sit in the central axis of a pipe and point along this axis, not the outside wall of the pipe, and I will use this point to position the framework.

Tape measures, laser alignment, optical measuring devices etc are all possible solutions to this problem. There are, as is said, many ways to skin a cat, but in this instance it is the laser pointer idea which is being investigated. In the past we have aligned this framework with tape measures but it was time consuming. The objective here is to devise something which will be easier to use.

Yes, you should have been more clear than, "clamp onto a pipe ".

I deliberately left it open to start with because there may have been systems to clamp around the outside or fit inside the pipe.
