Is It Possible to Use ER 309L Filler Wire to Weld SA 316L Material?

12/08/2013 2:40 AM

Presently we are using ER 316L filler wire to weld 316L parent material But due to non availability of ER 316L filler wire is it possible to weld ER 309L filler wire to weld 316L MATERIAL. If it is possible please mention in code where it is specified and new pqr is required or not

Yes, you can use it.

Will it be OK per the code? I don't know, either.

Get a copy of the code and decide for yourself. It's the only way you will ever be able to justify your decision.

Asking for anonymous consultation on an anonymous forum is irresponsible and unprofessional.

SolarEagle has a better answer to your question, but to give you a direct answer, 'While possible, it is ill advised'.

.

316L has molybdenum, 309L does not. The additional expense of using 316L is likely related to anticipated problems with lower grade stainless. Using 309L is likely to negate the benefit desired by using the higher grade stainless. There may also be problems due to dilution.

It depends upon what you are welding, what the use is and whether it has to be code.

The 309 will not do as good a weld as the 316 and may have strength, appearance and durability problems.

If you can't get 316L try different suppliers. If they can't help you, try some of the big boys, Grainger, McMaster Carr, etc. Find out why there is a shortage and whether it is regional. If yes, reach out to a contact in a area where it available and get it through them. It doesn't have to be a distributor, just someone who will get it and ship it to you for a reasonable price.

Good Luck, Old Salt

Since 309L SS steel has no molybdenum, it is not good to use 309L wire to weld 316L.

Yes, it has around 0.75%Mo but it is not good enough, because in reality it has less than 0.05%Mo when weld deposit analysed. Ask Lincoln, you will get the truth. And therefore it is not good for welding 316/316L SS steel.
