I Have an Idea, Need Help Getting It to Fruition

12/08/2013 10:33 PM

Hi! I'm Rory and I have an idea that both the Oil shipping industry and environmental scientists would probably welcome with open arms. I want it to be open source, so that the true experts and tinkerers can take it from here. But, I don't have a overall drawing app or program to get the simple drawings into an easy to understand format. I also don't have contacts in the oil shipping industry, or post secondary institutions that work on submersibles, plastics and gas compression. Anyone have any thoughts on the matter? All I can say for now is, that it is an oil boom that can be quickly deployed around a leaking ship. The idea is simple. Getting it out there is too. It's just, who will pay attention? Thanks!

There might be a patent on it already and therefore it is open source. Do a search as suggested above and you will find out if it does exist or not!

I have seen at least one link!

Good luck!

Google Sketch works well for most drawings...at least for the basic idea.

From there, there are forums that are specific to the oil platform/shipping industries that are free to join.

That will get the right eyes on your idea, and they will either shoot it down, or offer suggestions to move it forward.

Rory, there's a seeming contradiction. 'open source' and 'all I can say for now'.

If you think it's a possible money maker (bear in mind that plenty of big companies have worked on this stuff), then it's fair enough to be coy on the detail. You don't have the drawing app ? I'm baffled - a simple sketch that you paste as an image will do for here, if all you want is technical opinion and would like the stuff to be open.

You mention not having contacts. If your idea is a runner, and you share it openly here, the right people will come battering at your door.

Thanks. The remark about all I can say for now, was referring to the fact I haven't sketched out the idea, formed hypotheses, done the math... I just needed to be able to explain it on paper, but would like to sketch it out before I even make a fool of myself bringing it out into your guys snark comments.

Sorry, I don't mean any disrespect. It's frustrating when one asks a specific Justin and I get off comments. Has anyone dealt with creating an enabling defensive publication? For keeping open source from becoming a patented and therefore taken and misused.

Nobody will mock you for giving it your best shot. How about dealing with a first step and posting some sort of sketch. It's maybe not obvious how to do that. If you can get that bit done then we can all move on to some evaluation of your idea - there's no problem with saying 'I have some sketches, how do I paste it up to CR4 ?'.

enough with the cryptic angle, no one is here to steal your idea. if you're seeking quality input from a few esoteric minds you've come to the right place. we do not however have the ability to read minds. draw out a basic sketch of your submersible boom deployed wonder and lets start tossing it around for feasibility. if it passes that test then we can get into prototyping&testing and how you get potential clients and financial backing

Careful! There is still this around!

Our ideas all end up in the patent mill if we don't watch it!

In this particular case it probably already did!

You obviously have access to a computer so you have access to simple to use basic drawing programs already (Paint, likely Microsoft Word, possibly Microsoft Visio).

Again, even a simple hand sketch and a scanner (or photocopier with scanner function) could do the trick.

I also don't have contacts in the oil shipping industry, or

Lets not get ahead of ourselves just yet. Try to describe your 'open source' idea and add a simple sketch and lets take it from there. Have you checked the internet using some simple searches to see if your idea has already been tried?

Thanks. My seeming secretiveness was not as such. I just don't like putting ideas out until I myself have it figured out in the basics. And as a sketch artist, I would like to have it out there with the best description possible, for the guys on here can be quite critical. And, I know booms and such, and there is nothing that I know of being tried in the manner I am thinking of. Anyways, I want to see this in the right hands so that someone doesn't use it for profit. I want it legalised as open source, and have done preliminary research in how to do that. But a drawing program for my tablet would be nice, hence the request. Thanks again

generally "open source" means nobody will touch it because any investments made in it will simply be replicated by someone else with no money or time invested. it is throwing money away.

by the way, Dassaut Systemes has a AutoCad clone available for free (they are trying to kill off Autodesk once and for all, so there is value in giving it away for free in this instance) called Draft Sight.

I just spent much time signing up to draftsight and searching for answers, maybe you can help: is this program able to be run on a tablet, specifically an Android ( Toshiba)? Also, does it require a mouse or stylus? Is this program complicated, because I can do just fine with a "Microsoft paint" program, but again, I'm on a tablet and I don't think I can get it. I spent an hour looking for free sketching, drawing and technical design apps online and... Nothing. I am interested in draftsight, but don't know which version, if any I could use.

They have a version for Android I do believe, as well as Mac and Windows as well as a couple different versions of Linux.

Oh my golly! Thankyou!!! THAT IS EXACTLY what I needed! Thanks! And, to all the other commenters, THIS program is great for tablets. Pass it on. I'll bring back the results on my idea.

eecogeek, look around. That may not be of much direct help, but if you read you may find some useful stuff.

No disrespect intended, but you are not giving straight answers. You will probably hate me, so I am out of this one before it degenetates. All best with you project.

Very much to yout credit that you will come back with a progress report. I am terrible at doing so, and thus doff my hat to anybody who does.

I'm sorry if my coments are terse, but I think you need to give a bit more detail to get the help you seek. Other members have given good info, and if you click on their names you will see a highlight that enables you to send a private message.
