Using a Schmidt Hammer

12/09/2013 9:39 PM

I have not used a schmidt hammer for so many years now. However a colleague just called me from the field and wants to know why he keeps getting a zero reading when he was trying to find the strength of a new head wall onsite. He said he was not sure how he could get this from the graph he had with him. He was testing from under the head wall as well as from the top.

It sounds like the Schmidt hammer is broken....He'll have to get another one or chip test to a lab....I believe the min reading is 10....

Prior to testing, the Schmidt hammer should be calibrated using a calibration test anvil supplied by the manufacturer for that purpose. 12 readings should be taken, dropping the highest and lowest, and then take the average of the ten remaining.
