Why waste your time going to the factory when you don't know what to look for?

You might as well be a blind man inspecting a painting.

Hire a consultant who can inspect them.

Good luck.

Ask the manufacturer for a copy of the Factory Acceptance Test document he will use.

If he has made this exciter before, he will have a test document.

In factory, you check everything in the document is done and recorded accurately and meets the specified limits.

Will it be adequate? - no way to decide until you see it.

Agreed

The factory inspection reports/commissioning reports are the best way of determining what it is that needs inspection/verification/measurements..

Even the least technical check items like the part number and serial number are uber important too.

A reputable manufacturer will have a procedure for this that you have the right to review and edit if necessary (depends on how much money you owe them)

OP says that these are replacements for those that are in service.

I would recommend that the OP finds out who is maintaining these extant exciters and enlist/press gang their help to gather/harvest/dig out/ and dust off all the original documentation and commissioning reports and historical operation and inspection reports. The original factory acceptance documents must be archived somewhere. Fun.

Try to understand the subject. Seek further counsel, as others have suggested, if it is beyond your immediate capacity (if you have time to learn then that's good but I doubt you have the luxury of time here)

Do not go alone for the factory inspection, take the person who helped you (aka in house specialist) as well.

More eyes is good.

Well, the specification document under which these things were ordered would be a good start. Does it comply with the specification in terms of its design, construction, operation and performance criteria (rhetorical question - NNTR)?

Start by looking for the degree/certificate/authorization that qualifies you to do this work!

You may like to consult the agency who prepared the specification for purchase of the system. The same agency should have prepared various quality plans. One of these plans would be for acceptance tests to be conducted and the acceptance norms. Some agencies even ask for detailed testing procedure (including the national / international standards to be followed for the same) for their approval. Go through the same. You may also ask for test reports of same / similar equipment supplied by the manufacturer.
