Why am I Losing Connectivity to Network Devices

12/23/2013 3:19 PM

I have a Windows Server 2003 R2 with SP2 Virtual Machine connected to a Cisco 2960 GiG switch. It trunks to a Cisco 3560G switch with a connection to a Cisco 2950 switch. The 3560G has multiple SVI's configured. The 2950 connects to subscribers and network devices for a wireless network. The wireless network is a flat network composed of private addresses (for network equipment management) and public addresses (subscriber routers). The Windows Server has PRTG installed.

The problem is the Windows box sometimes cannot PING a device on the wireless network. With another computer connected to the same switch, as the Windows Server, it can PING the device. Once the second computer gets replies, the Windows Server starts getting replies. After a few minutes of continuous PINGs, the Server stops getting replies but the other computer gets them. Then, they switch. The Server gets replies and the 2nd computer times out.

I cleared the ARP table on the Server and everything works for a few minutes on both the Server and 2nd computer. After a few minutes, the PINGs timeout on one or both boxes.

Sounds like an IP conflict. Is the server configure for DNS? Which device configures the IP's for the wireless?

You could have the same IP jumping through the hardware layer.

Thank you The.Tinkerer for your response.

Is the server configure for DNS? Yes. The server has a public address with multiple private IP addresses bound
to the NIC.

Which device configures the IP's for the wireless? A Redhat box is configured as a DHCP server on the wireless
network that hands out only public IP addresses. The private addresses are only for management, which is
static on each device.

You could have the same IP jumping through the hardware layer. We have many private (management) IP addresses that are un-reachable simultaneously.

Thank you in advance.

Gary, is this you?

Don't you hate it when these computers don't co-operate?

Remember this always, "A computer is just a fast idiot!"

Is this supposed to be helpful? I was looking for honest help on the matter, but the people on this forum are so big headed and full of themselves. Why have a forum with a ton of smart people and leave it open to the public if all you are going to be is condescending and rude to everyone that knows less than you? Isn't that why the forum is here and open to the public and also why they won't turn off anonamous posting? I found out that it is a malfunctioning switch BTW.

Perhaps this is the wrong forum for your question. Yes, there are some people that have grown tired of incomplete descriptions.

I was going to suggest that the switch may be the problem. I recently had to update the firmware with the manufacturers help. But I only figured that out by going to the horses ass mouth.

Some people attempt to use this forum to solve their homework assignments. You only learn by struggling sometimes. If you get kicked around on a forum, it is only an attempt to get you motivated.

Oh, by the way, all of our answers are free. Good answers are $1. Correct answers are $5. Dumb looks have always been free as well.
