Tablet Specs & Preferences

12/23/2013 1:38 PM

'Tis the season for a new tablet! I hope Santa provides the one you want. If he doesn't, how will you (or did you) choose one for yourself?

I'm in the process of writing a guide on tablet computer selection and am curious about which factors everyone thinks are most important.

I bought my wife an Ipad which helps keep her from feeling that I should keep her entertained so I guess it must work pretty well.

Many people stress technical specs as being the most important factor when shopping for a tablet (or smartphone). However, this thinking doesn't apply as much anymore. For example, consumers were trained to think that a computer/tablet/smartphone with a 2.8 GHz processor must be faster and more powerful than than one clocked at 2.4GHz. This is simply not the case. (Shameless plug for my blog entry: The Megahurtz Myth)

The same goes for pixel density. You can build an LCD with "a million more pixels than the iPad", but does that mean it's going to have a better picture? Nope. In fact, not only is the higher (than retina) density not noticeable, it is probably a cause of unnecessary battery drain.

The same also goes for battery size/density. You can have an Android phone with a battery that has 5x more mAh than iPhone, but if the horrible bloated OS sucks up the mAh's 10x faster, who won?

This is why I stress the importance of software. iOS is more polished, consistent, reliable, battery friendly, and safer than Android.

Shoppers look at the higher price of an Apple tablet/smartphone and exclaim, "Apple tax!" "You can get a tablet with better specs for hundreds less!" When you pay more for an Apple tablet, you're paying for the durable aluminum body, the superior OS, and access to apps that are usually more polished and reliable than their Android counterparts. Their customer support is also superior. Try taking your broken HTC Android phone to an HTC store. Oh wait, they don't exist. Also, Apple products hold their value much, much better than competitors. I bought my iPhone 5 brand new for $500 over a year ago. They still go for $400-$500 used. That would be extremely rare or will never happen for Android devices.

So, factors for me in order of importance:

1) Operating system.

2) Build quality.

3) Battery life. (Dependent in part on #1)

4) Resale value.

5) Price.

Tablets are on the way out, according to the latest sources of info I have.....It seems to be the larger screen phones that are making new roads, like the Galaxy 4, and others...

Next to the iphone 5, it looks huge.....also was told to hold off that the 5 was coming out soon.....

So update... I went and looked at all the phones, I have the iphone 3g, and am undecided between the Galaxy note 2 , and the iphone 5s. as an upgrade....The Galaxy Note 2 is about as big as you can handle with one hand and it still fits nicely in the pocket....The screen I believe is 5.5" and a column of text fits nicely on the screen and is easily readable without any manipulation...The price is the same and the mem is 32g for both....The downside is that my apps of course would in large part have to be repurchased for the Galaxy phone...the upside is that it is much easier to read and navigate on the screen....The downside is that the new iphone is pretty much the old iphone....the Galaxy looks and feels like an upgrade....

The main problems I have with my present tablet are: lack of portability, lack of memory, difficult erase/re-write capabilities, no connectivity or Wi-Fi capability, poor screen brightness, and lack of robustness. Battery life and resale value are not an issue.

I have not decided what properties I will choose for my next purchase.

Happy Holidays.

I am using a Sony reader, because i like to read without worrying about battery life.

For the rest i use this ancient device.
