Repair, Replace or Re-Spec?

01/11/2014 8:44 PM

When do you repair something, throw away and replace with like or consider changing to a better/lessor item and/or service?

Example 1: the handle breaks on a cheap plastic bucket made in Vietnam ... do you repair with a coat hanger, buy another plastic bucket or grow drought-tolerant plants and use the garden hose if necessary?

Example 2: the 1946 Austin car has seen better days ... do you restore at some cost and effort, buy a Hyundai i20 or upgrade to a Prius Hybrid and/or take the bus?

Project management is a balance between time, resources and money ... do you apply these strategies to your engineering problem solving? Should the governments of the world do the same?

'... Should the governments of the world do the same?...'

.

Of course they should. That is likely an excellent very extended long term goal. For now we should focus on the very basics like:

.

Doing what they say and saying what they do. (Use your words, correctly, like a big Government).

.

Working and playing well with others.

.

Choosing to either, spend less than is coming in, or bring in more than is spent. (Stay within your allowance, Government).

.

.

Don't get me wrong, it is great to set your ambitions high, but they have to master crawling long before they train to run competitively.

Example 1: Buy a decent bucket, one that will survive the duty cycle you intend to use.

Example 2: Junk the Austin. The cost to restore the car will be far more than it's worth if you need it to drive to work. If the Hyundai is your choice, buy it.

Gas prices may justify the hybrid in your area. Not in the USA. IMHO.

Don't count of government to ever make the "right" decision these days.

It depends upon the economic status of the consumer/user.

you take the Austin and create a reality TV show on restoration. you sell the advertising rights........once the car is finished you then to raffle it off for $50 tickets, sell 100K tickets and head to Hawaii for a vacation.

So VERY close to the mark! Instead of selling the Austin for a one off hit, the plan is to rent it out as a film prop / small wedding transport etc .. they do not call the front doors 'suicide entries' for nothing!

That's interesting. I've only heard the term 'suicide' used to reference rear doors that open opposite of normal...latch at the front, hinge at the rear, a la 1960's era Lincoln Continental.

And it is built in 'real steel' pre-crumple rate. Around 35 years ago, an erring motorist backed into the front grill of my Aunt Bessie's chariot. It somewhat destroyed the back of the compact. The Austin's damage was just a couple of small creases in the front fenders and one segment of 10 in the vertical grill was bent. I have purchased the 10 replacement sements so almost ready for the reality filming!

Realistically, the repair, replace or re-spec question was raised in an electronic warfare conference. An effective way to disable / distract the enemy is to damage but not destroy the attacking personnel and/or hardware. It can divert too many enemy resources to try and retrieve and/or revive the wounded, making successful attack against a weakened confrontation forces more possible.

And the way to do this is to tender a slightly lower cost for wiring harnesses for any defence transport platform .... that includes 'undocumented features' that when activated causes the wiring harness to act in strange and resource draining frustrations. Hence, the question ... repair, replace or re-spec?

1946 Austin has become ugly....buy the i20 !

I always look at 60% of the replacement as being the absolute ceiling for any repair cost. However, I cannot tolerate a broken bucket, so for peace of mind, I replace with (hopefully) a better quality bucket.

Some rich people won't dispose ols ones, they collect vintage cars.In a house in Saudi Arabia in the basement there were nearly 10 old cars of different makes/models. Some are mad in a particular brand like Benz, one guy was buying every model of Benz car.
