Best Varnish for Hub Motor Stator Coils

01/13/2014 2:45 AM

I was looking online and could not find insulation varnish for motor stators. Would caliper paint be any good or would clear nitrocellulose lacquer be better? Those are the only things I have.

Use the search term "winding varnish".

I have tried that but Ebay doesn't have any. I also need to paint the magnets on the motor as well and was wondering if caliper paint would be any good.

I don't know. Why does it have to come from Ebay? and.... Why do you have to paint the magnets?

Why does it have to come from Ebay?

He's from Scotland and has lost the combination to his sporran. Only thing I can think of.

36v shouldn't cause the paint to break down. I thought that it would need over 1000v to do that.

I thought Glyptal (sp?) was a good choice.

Glyptal is a high silaca solids varnish, reddish in color, used for motor and transformer coil stabilation and insulation, I've used it several times to get rid of that irritating buzz. You might find a simular product under a different trade name.

... ... Actually, heating nitro-lac's is common, to facilitate quick build-up using high-solids varieties as briefed here: (tho' I doubt that it exhibits the <dry> temp-rating of today's wire-enamels(!))

For the 'OP', mrehmus at post#7 ("GA") provided the 'bestest-rightest' answer...tho' he ought to have provided a simple LINK to some info on same...(!)

I _WONDER : how many readers are aware of the 'earliest history' of 'nitrocellulose lacquer'...?

From one of NACE's Coatings Courses (been thru 4 of them...don't recall which one divulged this)...
DuPont made a bunch of money 'developing' the first synthetic lacquer. They got paid by the government to do so, as the coating was 'discovered' while seeking ways to get rid of a humongous stockpile of unused bombs (and the stuff that went into them!) after WW-I.

The veracity of this statement (above) is 'somewhat_acknowledged' via the following:

"...DuPont introduced nitrocellulose lacquer, derived from a plentiful supply of World War I surplus gun cotton"... found at THIS page.
