Brushes for a Black & Decker Leaf Hog Blower/Vacuum

These parts may be hard to find. They are "throw-away" motors.

If you have the motor apart, a picture of the brushes would help.

There must be similar brushes in different brand motor.

Use carbon ones. You can always adjust the dimensions. I do it with a sandpaper, on a flat surface and sliding the brush over it in the longitude direction, while measuring the size with a caliper. A sandpaper of 200-250 grit goes well. If you want a smooth finish end with 400 grit. Be careful, because they are softer than you might anticipate. Do it with long strikes and divide the pressure equally when moving. A file works also but is more messy.

McMaster-Carr has some, but they're kind of pricy for cheap tools. eBay has some cheaper, search 'carbon brushes.' As dvm said, you may have to modify them a little, but it's no big deal. You can even re-use the old springs if you have to, or change the length, since they are soldered together. Make sure you fit the contact area to the armature and wipe off the loose carbon before installing them. BTW, I've noticed HarborFreight and other Chinese tools are including spare brushes more often now.

You should be able to order replacement parts where you bought the blower....They should have the part numbers....

I have built new brushes 4 times for a universal AC motor which is probably what you have in the blower. I just bought a rod of carbon and had at it.

Many True Value hardware stores have a large assortment of bolts, screws, and LOTS of miscellaneous, well, hardware. Usually one entire aisle is taken up by the display. Among the many, many things in the assortment are carbon motor/generator brushes, and they aren't very expensive. Get some which are slightly larger in every dimension than the ones you are replacing (if you can't find an exact match) and sand them to size as described above.

I've made brushes out of the carbon rods found in "D" cell flashlight batteries.(living north of 60 neccesitates creativity at times....)

Try Helwig carbon products in Wisconsin should be able to help and you cane get extra brushes for down the road repairs

Not really. You can definitely see the commutator in the picture he provided . Surely, it also has brushes.

Universal AC motors will run on DC and really have brushes.

With B&D I usually refer to the manual for part numbers. I have also found the manuals on the Black and Decker web site (if I don't have it). Although I have not needed brushes, so that might be a horse of a different color.
