Google's Future Plans Based On Recent Company Acquisitions

01/27/2014 9:09 AM

Google has been purchasing many companies, approximately 1 per week since 2010. A couple of their recent ones have made me think about which direction they are heading in the future. How do these acquisitions line up with each other? It sounds like they are looking to build androids.

They just agreed to purchase Deepmind, an artificial intelligence startup, http://tech.firstpost.com/news-analysis/googles-acquisition-deepmind-fascination-robotics-217054.html

Just before this they purchased Nest Labs, thermostats and smoke detectors that are sensor driven and self learning, http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2014-01-22/google-plays-smart-defense-by-buying-nest.html

They also purchased Boston Dynamics, a robotic company, http://abcnews.go.com/Technology/google-buys-boston-dynamics-acquires-robots-play/story?id=21233076

Many of their acquisitions in the last year have been facial recognition and robotics related. I'm just wondering if this is mostly for 1 big project.

its hard to tell but keep in mind when a company the size of Google, Microsoft, Broadcom etc absorbs an entire company they might have more than a single motivation or project. sometimes they want/need the talent of staff or management, sometimes its to secure the library of patents and intellectual material or they simply want to eliminate a competitor

Or they are financially compelled to do something with their money.

Big needs to grow to stay in business or they loose money on the go.

The share market is not forgiving on this one.

For OP the project: http://cr4.globalspec.com/blogentry/24097/Army-To-Replace-25-Percent-of-Soldiers-With-Robots-By-2030

It's all about the money.

Bill Gates, never happy with mere billions is forcing all Microsoft slaves to rent his operating systems and will soon be forcing all of them to rent his cloud for storage.

Greed is the motivation in all the cases.

It's kinda like politics. Screw the public, I'm going for the money.

Thing about Microsoft, they're leading the pack where it comes to handing your 'stuff' to the NSA. They gave to the NSA details on how to break into Outlook accounts and how to comprise their cloud service, giving the NSA carte blanche access to same and compromising the privacy of their (then) 250 million cloud customers.

Microsoft is dirt in my book. I don't care what they're offering, even if they offered it for free. Not even if they *paid* me to take it. AFAIC, Microsoft are traitors in that they're happy to aid and abet a government organization in committing criminal acts against the American people which amount to nothing less than undermining this country's Constitution. This is all public knowledge.

Microsoft also owns Yahoo! who, it was learned, helped the Chinese government track down alleged dissidents, many of whom were never seen again. Their motive? Market share. And what's our response? We keep buying their products, basically telling them "We're voting with our wallets and our message is: go ahead, take our civil liberties. It's okay, we're not using them anyway."

I read the article about reducing the size of the military and replacing them with robots. That also helped me to wonder their motive. I feel like it is all tied together in some way. Money definitely being the route of it.

As long as they don't rename the company "Skynet" I'm happy.
