What is WPS???

Here's some reading.

• WPS is the short form of Welding Procedure Specification.

• It is nothing but a collection of certain guidelines to deposit weld metal to get predefined mechanical and corrosion resistant properties.

• The main variables are essential variables, supplementary essential variables and non essential variables.

• Essential variable changes would affect the mechanical properties of the weld metal except impact toughness.

• Supplementary essential variable change would affect the impact toughness of the weld metal

• Non essential variable changes neither decrease nor increase the weld metal mechanical properties and impact toughness properties.

• A WPS shall be qualified by a procedure Qualification.

• The recorded data of the procedure qualification is called Procedure Qualification Record (PQR)

• A test coupon shall be welded and mechanically tested. Sometimes corrosion tests also shall be conducted due to project requirement.

• If the test specimen passes all the tests, then you can prepare WPS based on the PQR and applicable codes, specification, standards, contract documents etc.

• Major codes which help you to prepare WPS are ASME B&PV Section-IX (Boiler, Pressure vessel, Pressure piping), API 1104 (Pipelines), AWS D1.1 (Structural Steel Welding) and EN 15614-1

There are plenty of WPS templates out there, review it. But if you have an idea the type(s) of process you'll need, this will make it simpler.
