Welding Automation Information Needed

06/11/2007 10:14 AM

I need some info on welding automation for a research work. Can you point to some valuable websites on the subject?

What would be really awesome is some 'do it yourself' automation project.

The focus of my work is on the possibilities of welding automation for small companies.

What kind of welding are talking about, spot, MIG, TIG, stick etc.? I was involved in some welding automation in the past and each type has its challenges and therefore different costs to automate. Spot is probably the easiest but a lot has already done whereas MIG, TIG and stick are more difficult because you have to steer the weld gun path as well as control the welding control parameters.

For spot or resistance welding most of the early work I was involved in was essentially spun out into an company called WeldComputer . I was also involved in some TIG welding automation at GE but now that I remember back that work was done in 1985! Ahead of its time back then but it seems fairly routine so I agree with others in this thread try searching for welding robots.

Check Lincoln Electric http://www.lincolnelectric.com/ . On their website they have a lot of information on all types of welding. This include anything from basic information to technical specs on welding products.
