Steel Beam

06/06/2007 9:44 PM

I hit a steel I Beam in the middle of the Mass turnpike a couple months ago. The only markings that were on it are in Crayon/Chalk B248-D4-K0614. Also, stamped into the beam was AMS CAL. I was not hurt by this 20' beam. i would like to find out who lost this beam off their truck. It was going East near Lee, Mass exit.

I am not worried about you, but where did you leave my steel beam? My lawyers may find you responsible for any damage that you may have inflicted on my beam by hitting it. If it was going really slow, you should have pulled up behind it and proceed as appropriate. Instead, you rear-ended my steel beam!

Is there any truth in the rumour that this is the one Del Boy and Rodney were peddling on eBay last week?

Plonkers!

I've always wondered how you couldn't notice something this big falling off your load.

Even if it was in a scrap truck you would hope the driver was alert enough to notice a 20' beam falling out of his load. And at least report it to the proper people so they could get someone out there to move it.

Guest:

First of all, I glad that you didn't get seriously hurt. I work with structural steel everyday and the markings you saw were as follows:

1. B248-D4-K0614, is that particular beams call-out on the structural dwg (i.e. its identification and location in the structure). This number is useless to you identifying the company it came from unless you have the structural dwg.

2. AMS CAL, is probably the short form of the name of the contracting company building the structure. This short form may also be the location of the site that the beam was to be delivered. This is your best clue on finding the supplier of the beam and thus the trucking company hauling the steel.

Try a search in your area for either structural steel or building engineering companies and see which companies match the short form. Also try to think of any new major construction projects that are on-going in your area that may also match the short form.

Good Luck, let us know how it works out.

Found this with a quick Google. You could try asking these guys. American Mechanical Services of California. They look to be in some construction but looks like primarily heating cooling.

Glad you weren't hurt.

Talk to a local structural engineering design company or a structural build company and see if any of those letters and numbers mean anything to them. Also talk to steel suppliers in Mass.

Good luck!
