RFID Tags In Credit Cards?

06/11/2007 11:11 AM

Why were the implications for credit card fraud and identity theft overlooked when the embedding of RFID tags were placed in credit cards?

New credit cards allow hands-free theft

I'd far rather scan a card securely than wave it at the cashier to have it stolen.

The law of unintended consequences was totally overlooked, wasn't it?

There was suppose to be an encryption sequencer in the RFID past your name. A two level access Low level information Name and past related charges and a high level with an encryption sequencer. That way if you had lunch at Star bucks your last choice of coffee would come up automatically speeding up the buying process and giving faster service. Encryption is only as good as the secrete is kept. Once the secrete is out it can be stolen and or duplicated. The credit cards wanted a way to be faster than just plain old money. Cash transactions are still far faster in Brick-N-Mortar places. Just stand behind a check out during a busy time. Even checks are faster. Unfortunately theives work is stealing yours. Smart phones have bt on them and they just turned it on and grabbed the signal.

Stirling Stan and Rory Houlihan have hit on something curious. First, as Stan points out, the long delay in scanning, validation, and signature(if over $20 in most places) to complete the transaction negates the intended fast purchasing convenience of credit cards . Secondly, Rory Houlihan examines the incomplete multi level encryption sequencing which seems to defeat the purpose of the RFID system.

Isn't it possible to replace all this rather extreme anti theft technology with fingerprint I.D. systems? Fingerprinting may be out of fashion with the leading edge technologists but it's now at bargain basement prices. Credit card companies seem to have the ability to collect whatever data they need, so collecting and using fingerprint validation would seem (to me at least) to be the next step before DNA analysis LOL.

playing off of your fingerprint comment, do some research and look at what you are required to do in order to get a california drivers license.
