ASME Vessel with EN 1092-1, Type 11 Flanges for Nozzles

02/09/2014 10:16 AM

I am designing a vessel with ASME section VIII Div 1. As per client's requirement nozzle flanges are as per EN 1092-1,TYPE 11(weld neck). Flanges are not as per ASME B16.5. My question Can we use these flanges for ASME vessel ? Is any document required to submit to third party agency which is working on design appriasal of vessel ? Which material to be used for manufacturing flanges ASME or EN ? What documents need to submit to third party agency as flange acceptance criteria ? Thanks in advance.

It may be best to ask the third-party agency to which you will submit.

....However, you can use any unlisted material,

  • If the vessel does not need an ASME stamp after fabrication.

  • If the unlisted material is not a part of pressure containing part.

PS: Unlisted materials can be listed with the help of some ASME Section VIII Div-1 'tricks'

I have designed and fabricated vessels having nozzle and/or body flanges not per ASME B16.5. Please see ASME Section VIII, Div. 1, UG-10.

With agreement and acceptance of your A.I., flanges not per ASME B16.5 may be installed on a vessel to be stamped to ASME and registered with the National Board. To do so, you must meet the criteria contained in UG-10 and furnish calculations for the flange(s) per Mandatory Appendix 2 Rules.
