Help Needed: Plastic Water Pipe Detector

09/21/2005 8:32 AM

Andreas Charalambous writes:
I maintain a potable water supply network that uses underground plastic pipes. To maintain and improve the system, it is necessary to identify the exact position of the pipes in the ground. Are there any devices that can do so with great accuracy?

Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR)

09/22/2005 11:08 AM

Ground penetrating radar has been used for commercial and archeological applications of underground/subsurface imaging for some time now. It will image just about anything. I don't know about expense but I do know that there are commercial equipment sources out there. There are also a fair number of service providers who will perform imaging for you. Do a search on GPR or "ground penetrating radar" in your favorite engine (GlobalSpec's Engineering Web engine produces a rich set of results) and follow a few links. You'll quickly get a pretty good bead on the practicality of this approach for your purposes.

Tracer tape or mag tape is great if it is in the ground with your system. GPR will locate your pipe and everything else underground. In the final analysis there is only one device that will give you an "exact position" ................unfortunately it doesn't have a switch.

Good luck
