NIF may not be the only road to fusion…

Polywell And at a significantly lower cost to prove the concept.

In the meantime, we have a fusion reactor already running, powering our entire planet, with the exception of some fission reactors on the planet. This reactor is "safely" 93,000,000 miles (approximate) from us, and we are learning more every day just how to best harness the output for our needs.

If solar concentrated PV advances continue to be made, along with upconversion of some of the longer wavelength energy (thermal infrared) back to the active band of the PV, then cell efficiencies will skyrocket once again, and economics will take over. For areas like the one I live in, what could possibly be better peaking power than direct conversion of solar energy to electricity?
