Mounting Thickness of Hydraulic Cylinders

Pressure : 50 barBore size : 200 mmRod size : 100 mmStroke : 145 mmClosed Height : 1436

The pushing force required is 90000 N ( around 30 bar but max up to 50 bar)

The pulling force required is about 41000 N which is to be provided by spring.

Funny design if for 145 mm of stroke you have a mounting length of 1436 mm. It is a unusual ratio > 10 !!!!!!

And I do not understand your question. Which type of cylinder is it ? Make a sketch or send a picture or scan a doc picture and send it in jpg format.

Its a Low pressure hydraulic cylinder, We need the exact dimension in order to design our braking system.

So what part do you need help with?

You have your bore diameter, rod diameter, input pressure range and required forces.

What do you think you are missing?

I would like to know is there any formula for calculating the Mounting thickness, i didn't see any formula related with thickness calculation, thats why i ask you, i am new to the cylinder design, area, force, pressure, speed, flow rate they have a formula, but for thickness i dont know how to calculate....Do you have any idea on this...

Because of the variety of mounting arrangements, the term "mounting thickness" is undefined. A picture might help.

This is called a clevis mount arrangement. At each end, the mating part would be two pieces of plate, ≥50mm thick, on either side of the 100mm thick "ear", in all forming a sandwich.

Hello sir,

is there is any calculations to find out the exact value of the mounting thickness based on the bore dia, rod dia, push, pull force, pressure e.tc. we need this thickness value in order to design our braking system.

Look in any catalogue for cylinders and you will find for the diameter of your pin dimensions for the counterpart. You may even be able to buy a ready available of the shelf part. Basically it is a plate with a thickness about thepind iameter with 2 "walls" with a bore for the pin in both. The palte has 4 holes for fasteners on the structure. The bolts have to checked as dimension and quality for the pulling force.

Now I understand why theratio L/stroke is so big it is given by the return spring.

Just curious but it looks like you have a double acting cylinder so why do you need a return spring?

Hi,

Our attached drawing is our standard cylinder drawing for working pressure of 210 bar.

Our customer is working at only 50 bar max, as such please calculate the thickness required
for tang end ( male end ) type design, now the thickness is 100mm for using at 210 bar , if i use at 50 bar how much thickness i can reduce, is there any formula for finding the thickness, i have one formula but i am not sure whether its correct or not.
Design stress= F/TX(D-d) x square root of D(sq)/d(sq) - D/d+1 <or equal to sigma Y (yield strength)
where F=pulling force, tx=thickness of tang end , D=bore dia, d= rod dia, ..anyone have idea for calculating thcikness.

It is as you mention your "standard" cylinder which means that you are a manufacturer of such rams. In this case we are those who should ask you for the right way to design a connection and not the opposite.

But I can give you an answer. There are 2 ways to do it depending on the clearance between pin and bore. If the clearance is small you can consider (it is an approximation) a pressure distribution between pin and bore with cosine profile over around 60° on each side. If the clearance is relatively big i.e. the counter piece is very stiff then you should consider a concentrated force and the counter piece as a curved bar clamped at an angle of about 120-135° on each side of axis. You can solve the problem cutting in 2 and introducing a moment and 2 forces one radial and one tangential. Condition is due to symmetry the section rotation angle is 0 in the axis plane.

Thanks for your reply, but i searched in some Sites they indicate

It is normal to have the rear clevis thickness the same as the rod end thickness.


* The rod end thickness cannot be smaller because the rod is 100mm diameter something like that..
