And to think all they needed to fix the problem was a black plastic garbage bag.

Who Knew!!!!

Black plastic garbage bags?

Oh, you mean the sandbags...well, since we don't have a superman with laser vision who can freeze it into blocks which he can then hurl into the sun I guess we'll have to block the flood with good 'ole sandbags. There is nothing like a classic.

Actually I was refering to this line in the last paragraph which made absolutely no sense at all.

"TEPCO said about 100 tons of contaminated water overflowed through a rainwater drainage pipe, and plant workers attached a garbage bag to contain the leakage."

A plastic garbage bag fixes the problem?

What makes me wonder is the sentence after your quote, the very last sentence:

"It said the leak stopped after workers closed the valves and the water did not escape into the Pacific."

OK, who and why did anyone open these valves? If I was a reporter, this would be my next question.

Egads... They more than likely stuffed the garbage bag into the drainage pipe. Now we need to worry if the energetic particles emitted by the "hot" water will degrade the plastic.

Godzilla in the making.

This is the direction this thing is headed.

The cost of other alternatives is simply too great.

This is the IAEA recommendation.

A slow release to the sea should only be considered as a last resort. Then again, how many years does it take to reach the last resort.

They obviously did not educate themselves on the proper diking and damming techniques.
