A Swordsman in WWII

02/21/2014 12:53 PM

I stumbled across this story about an Englishman fighting in WWII with a sword and a bow. If this is a true story, was it ever made into a movie?

Here's a little more history:

That would be a good movie!

It would be too pro war.....unless he was portrayed as a mad man...Still possibly dated for today's audience...

"Safety wasn't exactly something Mad Jack was after, though. He was disappointed to learn that the war was winding down and that he had missed a year of it. Rather than return home, he got himself assigned to Burma where the war against Japan was still in full swing.

By the time he got over there, though, the bombs had been dropped on Nagasaki and Hiroshima, meaning that the war was basically over.

An unhappy Churchill vented, "If it wasn't for those damn Yanks, we could have kept the war going for another 10 years!""

I agree that if a movie tried to promote Mad Jack's view of the world, it would be pro war. However, there has always been pro war wackos individuals in every generation.

Would it be worse than Saving Private Ryan?

Sounds like a better movie than the trash that's just filled with killing for the sake of killing.

I suppose it could be worse, as in, say, "John Holmes, Mighty Swordsman"

Funny you should mention that. The UK papers had a story recently about an RAF pilot who was re-patriated during WWI because his 5 older brothers had all been killed. The vicar's wife wrote to Queen Mary asking if there was anything that could be done.

His mother always remarked to pregnant women "Don't have boys, they just become cannon fodder."

I have the feeling that I have heard of this guy, but the memory is faint.

I was stationed in Germany for the last six months of my National Service, helping this Intelligence Corps Warrant Officer 2 run a school teaching the rudiments of reading an air photo. The boss, an artillery major set the course up so some of his artillery officer buddies could have an extra thing for their resumes, they were being bowler-hatted (downsized) at the time.

This WO2 had volunteered at the beginning of the war and been put in the Royal Engineers but this was too tame so he transferred to the infantry this was better but when he heard they starting the parachute regiment, he transferred. Again, this was better and that lasted until he heard they were starting a glider pilot squadron...he flew one into Normandy on DDay and was one of the few that landed his craft instead of crashing it. He moved to the Intelligence Corps after the war because the best trade pay was there.

He told me that a few years later he met a captain who also had both parachute and glider pilot wings, they were the only two people that had both.

Another topic about him, these guys had to go back to their headquarters for courses now and then. It had been noted that on one of these trips, he had diddled a woman, her sister and her daughter, all in one night.

I was trying to remember another character...and succeeded. His name was Popski and he had a "private army".

British no doubt, but from his kit he sounds more like Scottish than English. Also his attitude
