Solar Flares

02/26/2014 11:19 AM

recently our local star has had a bit of indigestion and kicked out a healthy flare. besides its known effects on our communications systems do you think a flare has any direct impact on human life, adverse or otherwise?

The GW/CC people might not like it. Excess solar input energy really messes up their "humans are to blame' numbers and overall theories.

Your pacemaker will still be "safe" even when you die of massive solar irradiation! The question is will it keep you alive by stimulating your heartbeat.

I saw nothing... I felt nothing.

In places where there's less cloud cover, flares have a direct impact on human life by generating mythologies, and providing direct and indirect amusements.

Radiation hazard for flight crews has been assessed as low.

Thunderstorms can pump out the equivalent of a full body CT too.

Yes, indeed there is an impact. Conspiracy theories increase and the doom and gloom of 'End of the World' folks tell you, 'I told you so' and churches become increasingly more busy.

The super nova of 4 weeks ago boosted Youtube viewership.

Any change in the solar output has effects on the planets around it. If we detect a flare we have just hours before we are impacted by the radiation. The question is how much , when, and where the effects are manifest. Of course we do not control of nor can we limit the consequences of increased or decreased solar radiation on our weather systems or the direct effects on our lives. Just keep your head down and stay indoors forever! Unless you are Al Gore, then write a book, make another video, and fly around the world yelling "The Sky Is Falling!"

Yes, solar flares are known to have a direct impact on our electric power grid. As the Earth passes through the flare at exactly the right angle huge currents are induced in the loops formed by long transmission lines and the earth. As these currents pass through through transformers a large DC offset occurs which saturates their cores and screws up the protective relaying causing massive outages.

As recently as 1989, a geomagnetic storm energized ground induced currents which disrupted electric power distribution throughout most of the province of Quebec, there are other incidents as well. It is easy to postulate an event that could disable an entire continents grid for days but hard to imagine the economic and human chaos that might ensue.

Telegraph offices caught fire due to a solar mass ejection in the 1800s.

It's one of my favorite doomsday scenarios. Between a huge SME, a massive re-awakened caldera, a meteor and a contagion, our civilization is hanging by a thread.

But until then, happy days!

I'm pretty sure geologists would be able to provide at least a few days' warning of a volcano, NASA's scanning for big rocks and the WHO is watching flu strains closely. The Sun could snuff us out with only 2-3 days warning.

Well, yeah...

Is it measurable? yes.

Cumulative effects of solar radiation are a part of life. One adverse reaction can be countered by one positive effect. If that single little x-ray happens to shred the DNA strand of a newly "born" cancer cell...who's to know?

The cumulative effects of using a computer probably give rise to more problems.

I do believe Solar eruptions can disrupt weather patterns, some of which cause death. Long term scientific studies need to be conducted to prove a direct link to human health, but we all know as previously mentioned, that radiation can cause cancer and other illness. Here is a site that deals with this phenomena, there is also an option to receive a free weekly news update. https://earthchangesmedia.com
