Toughbook CF T8 Hardrive Windows Install Question

03/02/2014 2:12 PM

I bought a Panasonic CF T8 with no O.S. installed. I tried installing XP from a Dell reinstall CD (which works fine on other laptops like CF T2 and IBM X60s) but it stops about one min into the install process. I tried to run DBAN and it wont run. I tried to run the Hitachi drive fitness software that I have on a CD and it wont run. Spinrite says HD is ok. Laptop seems to run Puppy Linux ok.

I used puppy Linux to partition and format the HD

I get the feeling I am missing something.... Any thoughts are welcome?

Thanks

"...works fine on other laptops..." means less than you believe. Try another install disc, preferably with integrated SP3, let IT make the formatting, and block any unlocked WIFI untill finished. S.M.

I think what you are missing is the CF-08 are not standard windows XP compatible.

They will only work with XP embedded or the Windows CE systems so you need to be getting a copy of windows XP embedded or one of the CE 4, 5 or 6 programs which can be downloaded for free online if you know where to look.

Its a CF T8 not CF 08. The CF T8 is a standard clamshell laptop type thing whereas the CF 08 is for use in things like police cars...I think.

What we are missing are you BIOS type and version, drive model, and Dell reinstall CD for what?

It's interesting that Puppy will load but not DBAN.

Its a Dell re-installation CD for xp professional and on it it says "only use this cd to reinstall the o.s. on a Dell computer. The cd is not for re-installation of programs or drivers" You can buy this sort of disk on ebay and they come with a bolt or bit of wire so that the O.S. can be said to have been supplied with the computer.

I have never come across any computer where DBAN will not run which makes me think something maybe simple is going on that I am not seeing.

I just noticed the hardrive in the laptop is SATA AHCI. Would the AHCI stop it installing XP and stop DBAN running???

Nice catch. Normally that's in the bios, since that is a hardware level interface.

AHCI is a SATA interface, so your IDE drive won't work correctly with that setting.

I've successfully installed Ubuntu Linux on similar laptops. Can you use a Linux OS? If you can, the laptop will usually run faster and more reliably than with XP (and probably Win7).
