Electric Motor and Shield

03/04/2014 12:27 AM

I am working on a physics experiment and have only used stepper motors. I need to find a 25-30 W motor with a slew rate of 10-20Hz. Of course I expect some gearing to be involved. I need it to be speed controllable with arduino. Sort of drowning in lists right now. I probably need a good introduction to the literature here.

Your best bet would be to talk to a few suppliers - they'll help you build up a picture of what you'll need, and after the first couple you should get familiar with the terminology and what sort of kit is available.

If you PM me your e-mail address (don't post it it open forum, admin will frown upon it an delete it!) I can send you a useful bit of blurb about motor selection. Click below:

Superior Electric ( SLO-SYN stepper motors )

has an excellent tutorial booklet on steppers and step controllers.

I expect other stepper manufacturers do as well.

Thanks but I was saying that I do not need a stepper motor. I need a simpler AC or DC motor that has good torque density with these parameters.

I should have been more clear about that.

You guys are great. The static I am trying to cut through in all this is to find what type of motors give the greatest power per volume or weight (at a reasonable cost). I sense some of these calculate these densities by neglecting all the other electronics that go to drive the thing. I want a variable speed compact device for a simple application with occasional use and am wondering if the old fashioned brushed DC motor is the best choice.

Trident Engineering a good place to browse small motors. Usual disclaimers.
