Transparent Solar Films

03/04/2014 8:08 PM

Dear all,

My name is Duke. I am a Graduate student at the University of Colorado in Boulder, CO. I am writing to request with a research endeavor. I and my fellow team members are researching the feasibility of developing transparent solar films for use on windows and glass structures for the purpose of generating energy.

To that effect, we have developed a survey to help us gauge how the solar market would respond to this product.
Please use link below to take the survey. It won't last more than 5 minutes.

https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/STCorp

Thank you.

Wrong audience for your survey. Your survey is a marketing survey, this is an engineering forum.

"developing transparent solar films for use on windows and glass structures for the purpose of generating energy" may be feasible, it probably is. But, there is much work to make the concept a marketable product.

I assumed that you had some conceptual notions that you wanted the forum to look at. (Tornado, disregard the "at" at the end of the sentence).

Good luck with the project.

Have a look online as there are a few solar companies that have designed and produced this type of product.

For example - Sunways

TerraSolar (USA) also used to do them but seem to have gone out of business.

There may be more as my information is now 10 years out of date. Solar technology has advanced somewhat too.

I was watching MTV last night and their series on "Cool Cribs". What was so special about this program that they mentioned transparent PV panels that covered windows.

Thought you'd like to know

No photovoltaic collector has EVER produced more energy than it took to make it in it's entire lifespan. even the most efficient ones made from multiple layers of different semiconductors in an effort to absorb and use every photon falling on it is only about 43% efficient, and the energy required to make it is such it only makes sense for use on spacecraft. Solar power serves a very small niche purpose, but for most things it is a net energy sink.
