Electrical Sales & Marketing Engineer

03/23/2014 8:27 AM

Dear All,

I am Murugesan M.C B.E EEE and I am in Diesel generator sales & Marketing. But this job is not so much related to technical, hence I want to do marketing of a electrical product which should be highly technical like providing technical solution to the customers, and it should be like giving presentations to the customer and the customer should be highly professional and corporate customers. It should be direct marketing and not through channel partners. I got struck in career as I am not aware which electrical product will match these creterias. Hence please help me so that it will be so much helpful for my career and my life.

Dear murugesanmc,

As any prospective employer might do, I reviewed your former posts here on CR4.

I should say I reviewed your requests for members here to answer the questions posted by you in the past.

Not once during your time here have you ever offered any technical assistance, or help in any way. You never demonstrated any sound technical knowledge of electricity or electronics.

You just asked what some might consider rudimentary questions about concepts you should have already understood.

Therefore, based on this history, it would be impossible to recommend any career path for you.

I think you would be completely lost in "highly technical" work place, surrounded by highly professional and corporate customers.

Good luck.

You might try lighting products. They are electrical products and the big customers will be large retail store buyers. They might sit through a lofty presentation but the real customers hardly know anything about them. And the big buyers only really want to know a couple of things like price and warranty. There are plenty of technical issues as well, but with most customers it either works or it doesn't.

Come to think of it, that is the case with most products.

Perhaps you wish to sell something like an MRI (magnetic resonance imager) to hospitals? Of course, you have to know a lot about it.

If you just want your customers to respect you, then you must earn their respect with service before and after the sale. To do that, you must understand what the customer needs as well as what he or she wants. If they are two different things (need vs want) you must find a solution that makes them want to come back the next time they need something.

In the first place I do not agree with you that Diesel generator is not a technical product and does not need a technical person to market. I do not know in which country you do marketing job. In India most of the Marketing persons of all reputed manufacturers of Generating sets are mostly Electrical Engineers or Mechanical engineers even though knowledge of Automobile and Electrical Engineering is essential to convince a user to select a suitable Gen set for their requirement. As for selection of a suitable job depends on the technical competence and talent. The choice should depend on your liking of the job. Marketing job does not require much deep technical knowledge of the product you market, An MBA person can do it better and they do a better presentation compared to an Engineer. The remuneration and promotion scope of Marketing Staff is more than other departments and that is the reason most of the Engineers in India add an MBA to their Engineering degree. The real job satisfaction of an engineer is in carrying out real production , commissioning and maintenance though they are less paid compare to marketing personnel. If you want to change to real Electrical then join products related to Power generation, transmission and distribution and its end use . Machine tool manufacturing , installation ,servicing and marketing is is another choice. You need to earn experience to go to that area which you can help yourself and no one else can help.

What ever is your basic qualification
