Preventing Addiction to Internet

04/06/2014 12:07 AM

I have become addicted to internet. It hampers my work in office. Can you suggest a way that browser stops working after 15 minutes and then will not reopen for another 60 minutes. I am on a networked computer therefore, installing third party programs is not feasible.

You have a behavior problem, not a software problem.....see a therapist

"... Can you suggest a way that browser stops working after 15 minutes and then will not reopen for another 60 minutes...."

.

A close approximation can be accomplished by using Microsoft Internet Explorer on a computer with a Windows based operating system prefereably Vista or 8. One of the keys is to allow all automatic updates whether important or merely suggested. If your computer is still allowing more than 15 minutes access every hour, you are probably failing to adhere to some of Microsoft's recommended settings.

Don't open the browser to begin with and you won't have to worry.

Couple of thoughts on this:

Let your wife know, she will bust you of the habit real quick with her nagging.

Just put a quarter in a clear glass container in full view next to the monitor and each time you get on the computer add another one. You will have a clear visual "shame container". After a while it will get to you.

Contact your county mental health dept. Ask them for a referral to someone or some group that might help you.

While on the phone with the county mental health dept., ask them if there is a 12 step group (similar to AA, NA, Families Anon., Al-Anon) for this problem. There are many others that share your problem and sharing your thoughts with others is part of the solution. You certainly are not alone.

Try to quit cold turkey. Go "One day at a time". If that's too long a period go to "one hour at a time". Too long, go to "one minute at a time". It works for some.

Keep in the back of your mind, The Serenity Prayer "God Higher Power grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can, and wisdom to know the difference".

The problem you are having is similar to the ones that many others of us have been confronted with. You are not alone. Only you can make the change!

Good Luck, Old Salt

Tell your boss about your problem... proceed according to his reaction

No need to tell your boss, the IT dept. already has, either your access to the 'net will be terminated, or you will be.
