I began thinking the other night about how to drastically reduce the number of stolen automobiles, or at least reduce the
amount of time they go missing. This probably came about as a response
to the problems we had with police response concerning a stolen car.
Is anyone working on the following type of use for GPS technology, or is it already on the market?
If the US Government would require the auto manufacturers to
install a GPS transponder (encoded with the vehicle VIN) that would
send its location out continually, the movement of every auto would be
available at all times. This could easily be made available to the
police. Since the exact location could be pinpointed, it would be
possible to find/locate an auto instantly. Anyone tampering with the
units would be made subject to jail time. Of course, the insurance
agencies should be in favor of it, and it could make police work much
more efficient. The cost of manufacturing these units should be low,
because of production scale and current technologies.
The down side (?), of course, is that with this type of technology available, it
would be easy for the police to determine an auto's speed at any point
in time and have it available (even w/o a radar gun) for any speeding
infractions. I am sure there could be other uses, like tracking abuses
of criminals or underage drivers.
