Tracking of Stolen Automobiles

06/13/2007 10:40 AM

I began thinking the other night about how to drastically reduce the number of stolen automobiles, or at least reduce the amount of time they go missing. This probably came about as a response to the problems we had with police response concerning a stolen car.

Is anyone working on the following type of use for GPS technology, or is it already on the market?

If the US Government would require the auto manufacturers to install a GPS transponder (encoded with the vehicle VIN) that would send its location out continually, the movement of every auto would be available at all times. This could easily be made available to the police. Since the exact location could be pinpointed, it would be possible to find/locate an auto instantly. Anyone tampering with the units would be made subject to jail time. Of course, the insurance agencies should be in favor of it, and it could make police work much more efficient. The cost of manufacturing these units should be low, because of production scale and current technologies.

The down side (?), of course, is that with this type of technology available, it would be easy for the police to determine an auto's speed at any point in time and have it available (even w/o a radar gun) for any speeding infractions. I am sure there could be other uses, like tracking abuses of criminals or underage drivers.

In the UK we call this a Tracker system and we have had it for years. I will be very suprised if they don't already have something like this in the US

Hi Alan,

You're corrects that was not available to everyone which only for those whose has extra $Do sitting around. the availablity on high end vehicle, like ONSTAR is one of them that if you want it became TRACK in the system and fee will be apply. But it has some good feature...ONLY interacting live conversation with the rep when you've got stranded on the road, call home or friend. Cell phone more less for Emergency purpose.

The experienced thieves know the size/shape of the hidden unit and quickly find it and cut it off.

To remove the systems without disabling the car is not a 10 second job. Most of them send out an alert and start tracking as soon as the car is stolen. If a professional group of car thieves want your car, it's gone, but this at least makes it harder.

GPS is only a receiver, no use for tracking car. you have to link with GIS and a transmitter, so that you can track your vehicles at control room which minitor the vehicle movement.

or you can simply use a transmitter, this should do the trick.

But how about if the thief remove or broken this transmitter?

you can even use a RFID to indentify your thing as well.

As a simpler suggestion: why aren't remote central locking devices bi-directional, with the (powerful) car transmitter linked with the cars burglar alarm. That way when your alarm goes off in the car park or street: you know straight away it's your car, even if you can't hear the alarm.

Alarm have been available for some years with the option to send a text message to your mobile phone if the alarm is activated.

there are a number of systems available - most recent now use GSM phone system (they are much cheaqper than satellite tracking systems which have been available for a long time but expensive) to track a stolen vehicle - or even let you find it in the carpark!! Look at Finnish company Tramigo. www.tramigo.net

There are alarm with 3000ft range remote. It'll show you status if the alarm went off. Some even have paging so your friends can let you know they're beside your car.
