Wind Load on Tower

I am trying to calculate the wind load on a 30m power transmission tower but could not lay my hand any formulas. Can anyone help me on this?

The wind load on the turbine blades should be considerably higher than the wind load on the tower structure. It may pay to concentrate on the dominant factor.

You can search on "drag coefficient" and probably find useful information.

GA, even though that standard was developed specifically for telecommunication towers and their appurtenances, the astute OP will develop an understanding of windloading considerations and perhaps even search for and find the standards specifically tailored to transmission (line) towers for themselves.

Is this a free standing tower or does it carry transmission wires too? You will need some more details.

Everything that goes on there is also in the game, and the design (read aerodynamics) of the tower is important as well.

I used to, umpteen years ago, design transmission towers, but they were tapered single tube. You're probably dealing with a lattice structure made from angle iron. Our specs were ASCE (American Society of civil Engineers); if there was info on lattice tower there, I ignored it!

You may start with this standard from the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE):


ASCE 7-10

October 2013

"Minimum Design Loads for Buildings and Other Structures, Third Printing (Includes Errata)".

I'm sure that the EE community has their own standards for electric power transmission towers. If you're in an area that experiences snow and ice, then you'll need to also design the tower for those precipitations in addition to the wind loadings.

I hope you have access to FEA structural analysis software, because you're going to really need it!
