Earthing/Grounding of Raft Foundation

04/10/2014 12:03 AM

We are going to construct a tower at Jeddah beach of 65 floors above ground level and 4 basements , i.e 4 floors under ground level.

The questions are:

I ) Do we need to implement any earthing / grounding works in the Raft Foundation?

If yes , may I get some directions on the same?

II) Is the copper made materials of the earthing / grounding network adequate for

installation at said very humid area and salty soil or we have to use other materials?

If other materials are to be used , please advise.

I am a civil engineer and No MEP contractor has been hired yet.

Best Regards

1) No earthing/grounding work in raft foundation below ground.

2) You can consult "furse or wallis local agent" for designing and pricing the lightning and earthing protection system or a specialist designer. I hope you are following BS or IEC codes. for American code(NFPA 780) i don't have knowledge. The material is normally copperbonded steelcored rod but it can be full stainless steel or copper also(cost is a factor).they offer high level corrosion resistance.

Lyn, you took the typed words out of my fingers. This is a joke, Seriously building a high rise on the sands of Jeddah beach, silicone glass insulator, and they are asking here for advice. Hello Planet earth! I see the light is on but no one seems to be home!

Well sir, either you go for this or I do, as it is begging for answers.

Sorry I need to leave now, my UFO has arrived.

Earthing is a technique to protect the electrical installation and those who use the utility. Equipotential earth bonding to metal pipework is a requirement of the latest UK Building Regulations. And that's about it.

  • No-one earths the hinges on a wooden door, for example.

It's time to discuss the proposal with the Electrical part of the MEP Contractor.

Buck up old bean.

This can be your crowning moment.

Here we have a clueless civil engineer who claims to be "building" a 65 floor death trap.

Think of the lives you might potentially save if you could talk him out of this disaster in the making. Or at least talk him into geting competent professional help.

Take it as a challenge.

Onward and upward!!!

It certainly provides some interesting information from which we can decide where we might want to vacation.

Not sure, I guess that would depend on each individual's idea of fun.

That is your opinion, and you are entitled to your opinion, you have stated you opinion here, and frankly, I don't give flying F. And your toilet question, I assume that this is your shitty wit appearing?

You are obviously involved with this building and earthing project. Partnership is it?

God bless you mansuralaa47, you are an hilariously funny character.

Don't be too hard on yourself. I lost mine a while ago and found it weeks later in the vacuum cleaner. Obviously got sucked up when I was cleaning. I admit, it is a handy place to keep a mind or will to live, the vacuum keeps it fresh and free from colds and flu's.

Define "WE".

Are you one of a group of engineers, among whom there must be at least one electrical engineer?

Surely you are not the sole source of engineering for this project.

Why would you have responsibilty for the electrical installation?

Leave the electrical to the electrical engineers or licensed electricians.

If you are in the USA, to do otherwise is illegal, and I am sure that applies anywhere else there may be a concern for public safety.

Take care of the plumbing, remembering that hot is on the left, cold is on the right, and waste does not run uphill.

Neither should it run downhill too fast.

(Unless of course, you are playing the "Blame Game", in which case there is no downhill speed limit.)

In some jurisdictions the building or structural grounding is the civil engineer's remit. eg Oz.

In small towns the building inspector is required to be well trained in many

disciplines,electrical,mechanical,plumbing,structural,etc.

And the training is constantly being updated as code changes occur, insuring the safety of the public.

Large cities can afford to have specific inspectors for each discipline.

The point I am making is there is a parallel with civil engineers that must do multi-disciplinary work.

They should be sufficiently trained to handle the tasks assigned to them, and not have to rely on a forum for information that could be potentially damaging to the building or contents, or to personnel.
