Coil Spring Weight

04/11/2014 8:31 AM

I got coil springs which I redesigned with several materials. and I wonder if you guys know any info or references about calculating coil spring mass, I'd be really happppy!
Thanks guys

If you have density and you have volume you have mass.

You selected the materials so you have density.

Volume of unregular items is easily derived by its water displacement.

Put it into a bucket with measurement scale and water. Measure the difference and you have volume.

Voila! There goes your mass!

what if the coil spring's volume should be measured virtually?

I cant check the water displacement by my hand as coil spring size is around 3m height and 2m length

If you know the diameter of the coil and its total length, you then have its volume.

(If you straighten the coil out so that it lies flat, how long is it)

Don't over complicate this.

It may be too late.

Put it on a scale?

Think of a coil spring as just a long piece of wire bent into the shape of a coil. The length of one loop would be (Pi*spring diameter). the length of n loops is (n*pi*spring diameter).

The volume of the "wire" can be calculated by multiplying the cross-sectional area of the "wire" by the length of the "wire".

The density of the material (mass/volume) times the volume equals mass.

Incidentally, if the number of loops is too large to count easily, you can calculate the number of loops: Divide the coil length (not the length of the wire) by the wire thickness.
