Need Help in Designing - Periscope

04/16/2014 8:48 AM

I want to amalgamate the periscope with the above model which is used as a sound collector. Can any friend provide a mechanical drawing for the same. The above model should have 360 degree movability so that a person can hear and see the source of sound simultaneously.
Thanks friends.

Here is a paper which discusses the design of an optical periscope.

Another solution is to mount a video camera at the top. If you want to use a laptop to view or record, USB cameras are available that are simple to interface. You could use the laptop to record the sound as well.

Why not join the 21st century? Get a GoPro camera and mount it on a pole. Control it with your cell phone.

You need help to design a periscope?

I'm not sure I can do that.

The first perscope I built was in elementary school using a milk carton, scissors, tape and a pair of mirrors. Now a telescopic periscope would take a little effort to properly design but a simple search will help greatly.

Just use a CCTV camera. The cable can go around bends too....

This is children's playground equipment, so I would just bolt a parabolic dish on top of your periscope. The dish would feed the collected sound down a galvanized pipe and exit out a short length of vacuum cleaner type hose so the observer can hold it to his or her ear. I presume this periscope has no magnification, therefore no serious effort need be put into designing an offset feed system to truly focus the parabolic's audio down the pipe.

I am planning to build the same for children and it will be installed in a park. The motive behind this is to make kids aware about the properties of light, image formation and sound in an engaging manner.

Using gadgets like camera etc may not serve the purpose. As I am not a mechanical engineer but have this idea of amalgamation, I have posted this on this forum so that someone can help me in designing the same.

The design should be sturdy and should require low maintenance. Moreover if someone can give any idea about the material that may be suitable for the disc. Whether brass plating or GI is suitable.

The height of the periscope will be around 12 feet.

Thanks.

Mr.Subhasankar,

Fix new periscope over this device, over the top horizontal pipe and run it parellel to vertical pipe. You may take help of local mechanic.
