Self Aligning Idler Causing Belt Flap in Water Spray Area

04/19/2014 11:45 PM

Hi Guys,

I noticed our Conveyor Belt is vibrating pretty bad when goes over the Self Aligning Idler in the Dust Suppression water spray area. I checked the belt condition before and after and it's pretty smooth, straight elsewhere. Also, checked the next few Self Aligning Idlers and didn't notice any excessive bouncing.

Is is normal for the belt to flap when goes over the Self aligning Idler or something to do with Idler installation?

Cheers,

How's the take-up tension?

Have you checked the idler(s) to be sure they are circular rather than polygonal? ξ

I have checked the Idler and its the same as any other Idler. The Belt tension stays between 70 - 80KN however, this area is somewhere 40m away from loading station, so it has nothing to do with the tension.

Specifically, its the Self aligning Idler and in the spray area so I am wondering if this combination is causing a problem. That is the only Self aligning Idler in the Spray area.

Turn the sprays off and see what happens.

Tell us where you are and we will send someone over to take you by the hand and lead you in analysis and troubleshooting this problem.

check the idler for squareness . How old is belt could be stretched on one side if not square over run it in opposite side out of square then return to square by bringing 1st side tighter

Assuming you have no failed components (I will give you the benefit of the doubt):

A sketch of the conveyor system, with what rolls are driven, and where the load is applied, may help explain the problem.

I have seen systems where the driven rolls and the load keep good tension, but on the "return" side the belt is relatively slack, and flops around. Running and static tension in various "zones" of the loop can be quite different.

Depending on the span, you may beed additional rolls to help stabilize the belt.

You may need to spec a better (IP68+ rated?) SAI for that area: the water may have got into the bearing and it no longer has the assistance of grease. You may have noticed the first signs of failure, even if the outer casing looks good and there is no significant movement to feel manually as yet.

If the roller itself is free, round and lubed, then the "self aligning" aspect of the mechanism might be even too loose and wobbling akin to a rogue wheel on a shopping cart. If so, perhaps packing with some thickish grease would help dampen its movements.

Could be a belt harmonic from previous roller. (maybe a little tension tweak will settled it down) Also check for cleanliness of roller surfaces, some sticky may have landed on self aligner or previous roller.

Try interchanging Self Aligning Idlers to see if the problem remains in the same location.

My experience says that the issue is occurring due to faulty working of the bearing or idler installation. A similar type of issue occurred at our plant, the senior management choose the laser beam technology, to solve the issue. The reason behind occurrence of the problem was improper installation of the idler. Such type of problems are mostly seen in automatic garage door opener .The customer complain of breaking or uncommon sound or vibration from the belt, in some situation chain.
